Whirlpool cutting another 3,000 jobs - Business First of Columbus:

The Benton Harbor, Mich.-based appliance makeer said it is shedding additionapl jobs to adapt toa “rapidly changing and very challengintg economic environment” that led to a sharl drop in demand duringy the third quarter. “The global credit crisisz has had a profound negativd impact on what was already a weakening and very fragilegloball economy,” Whirlpool CEO Jeff Fettig said in a statement. “Decliningg home values, rising unemployment and very low consumet confidence levels will likely prolong a negativew demand environment at least through the middlweof 2009.” Whirlpool, which employs about 9,000 in Ohio, plansd to shut down a facilitu in Jackson, Tenn.
, and move the work to its dishwashetr plant in Findlay. That move will result in abourt 500 job cutsin Tennessee. The company this year has closee two plants in Mexico along with facilitiesin Tenn., and Oxford, Miss. Job cuts could arrive in the state as the company plansa to cut about 500 salaried positions inNorthu America, including contractors, but specifics on the cuts weren’t immediatelyh available. The majority of the new job cuts will takeplacw overseas, where Whirlpool plans to cut about 1,90p workers, mostly in Europe. The company employa more than 73,000 worldwide.
In addition to the Findlagy plant, Whirlpool in Ohio operates a dryer manufacturing operationhin Marion, a small-appliances operation in Greenvillew and a washer plant in Clyde. In Central Ohio, runs a third-partty Whirlpool distribution facility, which employs more than 100 workers. The job cuts are expected to saveabout $275 million annually, the company Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR) through the first three quarters earner $374 million, down 17 percent from $453 million througyh September 2007. Revenue through the third quarter isup 3.5 percentt at $14.6 billion, versu $14.1 billion last year.
